Bliss : Où en est le chantier du DVD Blade Runner ?
Charles de Lauzirika : Nous venons tout juste de recommencer à travailler sur le film. Le deal a enfin été signé après des mois de négociations. On ne peut plus reculer maintenant. Ma société (Lauzirika Productions) sera impliquée dans la création du Final Cut et de tous les bonus.
Bliss : Quel est le degré d’implication de Ridley Scott ?
Charles de Lauzirika : Ridley Scott se concentrera principalement sur le montage du Final Cut, mais nous voulons qu’il soit heureux avec tout ce qui va être fait. Il était très impliqué quand nous travaillions sur le DVD Blade Runner en 2001.
Bliss : Combien y aura-t-il de versions du film Blade Runner entre les anciennes éditions et les prochaines ?
Charles de Lauzirika : Il y a plusieurs variantes avec des différences mineures. Cela dépend des critères que représentent pour vous une véritable et unique version. Pour moi il y a cinq versions majeures : la toute première sortie de la salle de montage (Workprint) et ses deux ou trois versions ; la version cinéma américaine avec la narration et le happy end ; la version internationale avec davantage de violence ; le Director’s Cut de 1992 – qui n’est pas vraiment un Director’s Cut, qui se passe de la narration et du happy end et inclut le rêve de la licorne, des modifications que souhaitait Ridley Scott. Et enfin il y la prochaine Final Cut. Mais si vous êtes un vrai fanatique de Blade Runner vous pouvez probablement identifier des variations plus subtiles si vous incluez les versions TV et les tests screenings.
Bliss : Les acteurs participeront-ils aux suppléments ?
Charles de Lauzirika : Nous espérons en avoir autant que possible. Jusque là, les réponses ont été positives. Les gens qui ont travaillé sur le film me contactent eux-même, ça change pour une fois !
Bliss : Avez-vous déjà décidé des caractéristiques techniques du DVD ?
Charles de Lauzirika : Le DVD a une capacité de stockage limitée et avec la quantité de documents que nous devons mettre sur ces disques cela va être un challenge de tout faire rentrer et de maintenir une image et un son optimal. Nous ferons humainement tout notre possible.
Bliss : Y aura-t-il des bonus sur la réédition du Director’s Cut fin 2006 ?
Charles de Lauzirika : Je ne suis pas très sûr de ce que Warner a prévu. Cette ressortie du montage de 1992 est une surprise pour moi. Je suis essentiellement concentré sur la sortie 2007.

Bliss : Since when have you started to really work on Blade Runner all over again ?
Charles de Lauzirika : We’re literally just re-starting now. The new deal was made very recently, after several months of negotiations. I’ve known that things were looking very optmistic for months but it’s nice to see that the deal has finally been made. There’s no turning back now. My company will be involved in the creation of the Final Cut and production of all the extras.
Bliss : How many people are involved in the new DVD (and HD DVD/Blu-ray) project : decision process and actual daily work, and for how long ?
Charles de Lauzirika : Too early to say. We’re just getting back into it. We’ll be working on this for the next several months.
Bliss : What kind of budget ($$) is given to such a project ? Who, roughly, is paying for it : the studio Warner, Lauzirika Production, Scott Free… ?
Charles de Lauzirika : I can’t talk about that.
Bliss : How much is Ridley Scott concerned about the different versions and editions coming up, is he only focused on the Final Cut for instance ? Did he give you a specific direction for the editorial process of the future DVDs, or maybe only the final complete one ? Or do you have some conceptual idea(s) yourself that you can work on freely ?
Charles de Lauzirika : Ridley’s primary focus will be on the Final Cut, but we want him to happy with everything. He was heavily involved when we last worked on this DVD, back in 2001, but again, we’re just getting back into it now.
Bliss : Why are there several editions coming up by the way ? Why not go straight to the complete Ultimate one in 2007 ? To be more specific : which edition can be considered « commercial » one, and which can be considered « director’s artistically » one ?
Charles de Lauzirika : You’d have to ask Warner Bros. about that. But obviously our goal is to make the 2007 DVD the best release humanly possible.
Bliss : How many versions of Blade Runner (the movie) will that make total after all the past and future editing ?
Charles de Lauzirika : Well, there are several different variants, with only minor differences, so it depends on your own criteria for what represents a truly unique version. For me, there are five major versions. There’s the Workprint, and there are two or three variations of that. There’s the U.S. Theatrical Cut, with the narration and happy ending. There’s the International Cut, with additional violence. There’s the 1992 Director’s Cut, which isn’t really a director’s cut, but it omits the narration, happy ending and includes the unicorn dream, all of which Ridley wanted. And then there will be the Final Cut. But again, if you’re a true Blade Runner fanatic, you can probably identify a few more subtle variations, if you include TV versions and test screenings.
Bliss : Will there be bonuses on the Director’s cut re-edition coming at the end of 2006 or not at all ?
Charles de Lauzirika : I’m not exactly sure. The 2006 release of the 1992 Director’s Cut was a surprise to me, so I’m not sure what Warners has planned. I’m mostly focused on the 2007 release.
Bliss : Can you tell us already whom from the cast will be participating (Harrison Ford, Sean Young, Rutger Hauer… ?) ?
Charles de Lauzirika : We’re hoping to get as many of the cast as we can, and so far, the response has been positive. People who worked on the film are actually contacting me, for a change!
Bliss : Can you tell us some of the technical details of those releases ? Can we expect a DD 5.1 sound mix for instance, or even a DTS track ? Anything else ?
Charles de Lauzirika : There’s only so much room on a DVD, and given how much material we have to put on these discs, it’s going to be a challenge to fit all of that on and still maintain optimal picture and sound quality. So we’ll see. We’ll certainly do the best we can. — 10) Will there be any high definition disc released by the time of the Director’s cut DVD release at the end of 2006 ? Surely in 2007 ? Again, hard to say. It’s still too early to know for sure. Obviously, it’s a safe bet that there will be an HD version at some point, but I couldn’t even begin to guess when.
